FODMAP is actually an acronym for a range of different carbs. Foods high in FODMAP are found in a lot of different foods, including the common culprits onion, garlic, wheat, apples, honey, dates and milk. Then there are the “unexpected” FODMAP foods such as watermelon, asparagus, cauliflower, beans, avocado and mushrooms.
So why does it matter? The reason is that irritable bowl syndrome is closely linked to FODMAP intolerances. And IBS affects one in five people! Symptoms vary from person to person, however, some of the common signs include:
- You’re often bloated or have tummy aches
- Eating healthy foods make you feel worse
- You’re struggling to find the culprit
- Your relationship with the toilet is complicated
Given how common ISB is, it is important to be educated about FODMAP foods if you are experiencing the above symptoms but cannot quite point your finger on the problem. That is why we love the work which our friends at FODBODS are doing in this area.
